Violence by women on the rise in Britain

LONDON, July 31 (UPI) -- The number of British women held for violent offenses has shot up 11 percent, annual crime statistics indicated. The figures for the 2006-07 fiscal period totaled 87,000 offenders, an increase of 11 percent, The Times of London reported. The report said that for the first time violent crime was the reason for more arrests of women than shoplifting. An increase in young girls and women being arrested for violent attacks occurred in every age group, the report said. Overall, the number more than doubled in eight years data released Wednesday indicated, The Times said. The number arrested for theft and handling stolen goods was 80,000, down 6,400 from the previous year. The number of women held for robbery rose from 4,100 to 4,400.
